Hungry? Try Signature Bengali Dishes!

While western food is served in all major restaurants in big cities in Bangladesh. you may also find local dishes more interesting. In fact. Bangladeshi cuisine is known. even in India. for its unique taste.

The dishes are usually curry-based. cooked with exotic spices. To satisfy your gastronomical desires. you can try a number of dishes. including Korma. Rezala. Bhoona and Masala Gosht. Prawn masala. Chicken Afgani. Boti Kabab. Shutli Kabab and a variety of dishes with river and sea fishes such as smoked hilsa (the national fish). fresh bhetki and chingri malaikari( lobster Iking prawns). fried roopchanda and our favourite. prawn do-payaja. Khichuri. the Bangladeshi signature dish containing a medley of meats and lentils cooked in rice. is usually available almost all restaurants. Beyond rice-based dishes. you can also tryout mughlai parata. or naan. which go very well with curries. Vegetable dishes such as bhaji

Thirsty? No More!

If you yearn for something hot. try our fresh brewed tea. And you will find tea stalls almost everywhere in Bangladesh! If you prefer something cold, give yourself a treat with a refreshing lassi (made of yoghurt and water. often with fresh mango). If you want something healthier. try coconut water. You will find coconut stalls everywhere in Bangladesh where the vendor will serve you coconut in a rather interesting way.

When it comes to fizzy or "cold" drinks you will find all major brands-from Pepsi to Coke to Virgin. You can also find alcoholic beverages in hotels and selected bars and restaurants. including those of Parjatan. Drinking alcohol in public areas. however, is not recommended.

Sweet and Sour? Welcome to the land of Desserts!

In Bangladesh. you will find an array of items to fill yourself in, in between meals. For something sour. you must try the all-favorite chotpotti or fuchka (based on chickpeas and potato cubes) and for spicy ones give yourself a treat with singara (a local variant of samosa with thicker. softer crust) or daal puri (flour cake stuffed with lentils).

Having a sweet tooth? Indulge yourself with a gamut of sweet dishes that are unforgettable in taste! Milk (curd) based desserts, known as mishti, abound; from rosogolla to chomchom, you will find an array of round or even square shaped milk "dough", some coloured, floating on sweet syrup. A variant of mishti has milk-based syrup, known as roshomallai and another variant, known as swandesh, does not even have any syrup.

Beyond mishti, try our signature yoghurt, called doi (which doctors recommend to keep the level of your cholesterol in check!). Another popular local dessert is halua, which comes in various textures and flavours. Yet another popular dessert is sooji (semolina) with a medley of nuts. If you are around during holiday festivals, you can't miss shemai (sweet vermicelli) cooked in milk syrup, or fried in pan!

If you are around late fall, winter or even early spring, you can't miss pitha-Iocal cake, usually flour-based, such as chitoi, dhupi, takti, andosha, bhapya, puli and pua whuch are usually flour based.

Fruity? There is more and more!

Being in the region of the Tropic of Cancer, Bangladesh boasts a variety of colourful fruits. You will find vendors selling fresh fruits in various spots around the cities and in grocery markets. You can pick among others mangoes, lichies, Bananas, papayas, jackfru its, watermelons, pineapples, coconuts, Oranges and Guavas-eat them fresh or make a fruit punch!
